Feigned Mischief’s Must-See Films for 2008

2007 was not a very good year for films. It was a year of just too many painful-to-watch threequels like Spiderman 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Shrek 3 and Ocean’s 13- with only the 3rd Bourne film, The Bourne Ultimatum being the lone exception. Die Hard 4.0 was fab but it’s not a threequel as you can tell. Saying that, 2008 looks promising to me already and to show you why, please check out what I am most looking forward to see in cinema this year:

January:

  • Revolutionary Road – Di Caprio and Winslet reunited
  • Sweeney Todd- A singing Johnny Depp in another Tim Burton collaboration. It’s also a Sondheim.
  • Charlie Wilson’s War- Hanks. Roberts. Hoffman. Do I really need to say more?
  • No Country for Old Men- Be curious as to the greatness of this film from what I have been hearing.
  • The Good Night – Richard’s blurb of this film just got my interest piqued it being written by Gwyneth Paltrow’s brother

February:

  • Cloverfield – Everybody else will be seeing this so I might as well join them too!
  • Juno- Again, to satisfy a curiousity as to why it’s getting good reviews
  • Jumper – It’s Hayden Christensen for goodness’ sake!
  • There Will be Blood- Daniel Day-Lewis. Period.
  • Be Kind Rewind- I’ll see anything with Jack Black in it.
  • The 11th Hour
  • Rambo- To atone for having missed last year’s Rocky Balboa
  • The Other Boleyn Girl- I am so into English history and period films and although I kinda not approve with the casting (save for Bana) even if it’s going to be a stinker, I have already seen worst.

March:

  • Vantage Point – A very promising acting ensemble surrounding an American president’s assasination.
  • Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day- Frances McDormand and Ciaran Hinds in a mature period rom-com with the delightful Amy Adams!

April:

  • The Escapist
  • Persepolis

May:

  • Iron Man- Robert Downey as Iron Man and directed by Jon Favreau
  • Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull- If you are seriously not even a tad interested to see a 4th Indy, then I really dont know what to tell you. No trolling here please!
  • The Escapist- Damian Lewis and Joseph Fiennes. Eye candy galore!
  • Made of Honor- Patrick Dempsey as a lovelorn male best friend? I’m in!

June:

  • The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian- Having read all the books it’s just fitting I look forward to this, I hope it will be fantastic!
  • The Happening- Anything by M. Night Shyamalan is a happening. No pun intended.
  • The Incredible Hulk- Come on, it’s Edward Norton baby!

July:

  • Hancock- Will Smith, you’re my hero!
  • Mamma Mia!- Streep with gorgeous hunks like Brosnan, Firth and SkarsgĂ„rd and oodles of campy ABBA music! It’s going to be a party!
  • Wall-E- I am seriously enthralled with this robot! I think Pixar will do it again!
  • The Dark Knight- Let me be proven wrong about my initial thoughts on the casting of Ledger as the Joker. You may cast the first stone.

August:

  • Tropic Thunder- Tom Cruise in a Ben Stiller comedy? Are you having a laugh? Let’s!
  • X Files 2- I still believe that it’s out there, Mulder and Scully.
  • The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor- Brendan Fraser can still do this even without Rachel Weisz, as long as John Hannah is still around

September:

  • How to Lose Friends and Alienate People – Yes, it’s our Simon Pegg!

November:

  • Bond 22 – Daniel Craig. You know his name. Bond, James Bond.

Other films I am looking forward to see but not so sure about their UK release date are the ff:

  • 88 Minutes – It’s starring my inamorata Al Pacino.
  • Angels & Demons - Because it has a much better plot than the Da Vinci Code.
  • Australia- Nicole Kidman & Hugh Jackman in a Baz Luhrrman epic.
  • Body of Lies- Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe reunited again this time with DiCaprio and the talented Carice Van Houten
  • Frost/Nixon- Having missed this much talked and critically acclaimed production at the West End, it would be great to see it at last. With Langella and Sheen reprising their roles.
  • Righteous Kill- Pacino & De Niro reunited
  • State of Play- Pitt’s loss is Crowe’s gain with a stellar cast including Dame Helen Mirren and Rachel McAdams
  • Stone of Destiny- It’s about bonnie Scotland lassies/laddies!
  • Synecdoche, New York- Written and directed by Charlie Kaufman. That’s really all that you need to know.
  • The Countess- I am a huge fan of Julie Delpy since Before Sunset and after seeing what she can do as a director in 2 Days in Paris, I’d love to see more of her work.
  • The Time Traveler’s Wife- Rachel McAdams & Eric Bana is just WOW.
  • Valkyrie- Tom Cruise as a German officer who plots to assassinate Hitler. With a brilliant cast including Kenneth Branagh.
  • Vivaldi- Another all-star cast on the life of times of the great composer.
  • Wanted – James McAvoy! Exclamation point!
