Wkipedia states that a gobbet is an extract of text, or image, provided as a context for analysis, translation or discussion in an examination.
In the 2004 National Theatre play turned film The History Boys, the boys were up for Oxford and Cambridge and to prepare for this, their headmaster brought in a new teacher to polish their writing style and assure them a place in the sacred universities. He encouraged them to use gobbets, or in layman’s terms, quotations to lace their answers with.
I thought that apart from the idioms that I introduced recently, I’ll post some of my favorite gobbets here too.
