Critics’ Circle Awards 2008

If you are a cinema fan, tis the season for awards, be it the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild, the upcoming BAFTAs and the Academy. The world of theatre has their own with the Evening Standard Awards, the Laurence Olivier and the Tony Awards. This time around, it’s the Critics’ Circle’s turn to announce who were the best in theatre last year, with the big winners coming from the DONMAR.

The John and Wendy Trewin Award for BEST SHAKESPEAREAN PERFORMANCE
Derek Jacobi for Twelfth Night – Donmar West End at Wyndham’s
David Tennant for Hamlet – Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford & at the Novello

BEST DIRECTOR
Michael Grandage for The Chalk Garden & Ivanov – Donmar Warehouse & Donmar West End at Wyndham’s

BEST DESIGNER
Neil Murray for Brief Encounter – The Cinema, Haymarket

MOST PROMISING PLAYWRIGHT
Alexi Kaye Campbell for The Pride – Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Upstairs

The Jack Tinker Award for MOST PROMISING NEWCOMER
Ella Smith for Fat Pig – Trafalgar Studios & Comedy Theatre
