April Fools

1 Apr

First of April.

Officially, we enter spring.I have always loved the name April. I was using it as a codename when I was in my teens and got involved with what was then still the trend of phone pals, remember those days? Your phone line got crossed with somebody else’s and you end up chatting up for hours on end, I never give my real name, nor do they know my number, and the name I give is April. When my mother was pregnant when I was 16, I begged her that if it’s a girl can I give her the name April. And no she wasnt even born on the same month, she was born on September, hey ho I got my way and now I can use April as if it were my own.

In Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musical “Company” the lead female character is April, she’s a beautiful flight stewardess who caught the eye of Bobby, the quintessential bachelor and whose story is told in the musical. After an evening together, Bobby finds himself extremely attracted to April and would like to spend more time with her, they sing a soulful and beautiful duet called “Barcelona” that to me sounded more like ‘a promise of very good things to come’, like what spring promises, like what the name April seems to denote.

Be a fool, love an April now. 🙂

Amame.
