Film Review: Run, Fat Boy, Run

7 Sep

Plot: Five years ago Dennis (Simon Pegg) was at the altar about to marry Libby (Thandie Newton), his pregnant fiancée. He got cold feet and ran for the hills, and he’s been going in circles ever since. When Dennis discovers Libby’s hooked up with high-flying-go-getter Whit (Hank Azaria), he realizes it’s now or never. He enters a marathon to show he’s more than a quitter but then finds out just how much sweat, strain and tears it takes to run for 26 miles. Nobody gives him a chance, but Dennis knows this is his only hope to be more than a running joke.

Disappointed after having seen the much hyped 1408, I thought I could still do with another film and maybe my evening could still turn out better, so I checked out this new Simon Pegg starrer.

Well, Simon Pegg saves the day. It’s a rom-com reminiscent of Shaun’s sort of loser character but this time Shaun’s got a cute 5 year old impressionable son. It’s another underdog story with a lot of heart that makes you feel really good and totally root for Pegg through and through. Schwimmer did well in bringing out the thespian in Pegg. Dylan Moran is the new Nicholas Frost. Jog on!

It sounds better than it looked then, that trailer had next to no comedy in it and looked a real stinker, nothing like Pegg’s usual.

I missed Nick Frost. He has funny written into his appearance. I’m still surprised you gave this more credit than 1408 .. *shrugs*
