Film Review: The Departed

12 Oct

Plot: ‘The Departed’ is set in South Boston, where the state police force is waging war on organized crime. Young undercover cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate the mob syndicate run by gangland chief Costello (Jack Nicholson). While Billy is quickly gaining Costello’s confidence, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the police department as an informer for the syndicate, is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operations he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the gangsters and the police that there’s a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being caught and exposed to the enemy — and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself. – Yahoo Movies

I know the year hasnt ended yet but personally this is my best film this year, with Mission Impossible III & Superman Returns very close by. DiCaprio steals the show from Nicholson, I still cant believe I said that but he really did. He had done well in The Aviator the year before, another Scorsese film, but he just seems to get better and better. Nicholson has always been consistent in all the films I have seen him in and he was just as powerful and effective here.

The whole cast is extremely strong with commendable performances from Damon, Wahlberg, Sheen, Winstone and Baldwin. I guess the only downside is the love triangle between the two leads and Farmiga, just didnt do it for me, and you already know I despise love angles in action films. Nevertheless, that did not affect my whole appreciation for this film.

I agree with you a 95%. This movie rocks. But… I am sorry. It belongs to Jack!

Didn’t Baldwin own this film? C’mon…let’s argue. ;->

Haha another Baldwin fan are we, hap? So did you see The Shadow too? Cause I love him in that!

As much as I want to dislike him, I can’t help but enjoy the majority of his performances. If I can just avoid seeing him in news interviews, I’m easier to win over in the theater. Too many news interviews, though, and I lose my patience.

The Shadow? Great movie. I’m sure it was panned by critics, but I liked it.

First saw him in the made for tv-movie Dress Gray and loved him there. The Shadow is one of my fave Alec Baldwin films (The Hunt for Red October being one of them) despite what the others thought about it.
